/CUT THROUGH 2026/
A capacity building initiative for Global Surgery

CUT THROUGH 2026 is a multidisciplinary capacity-building initiative designed to equip students, trainees, and early-career professionals with the competencies needed to contribute meaningfully to global surgery. Held across four sessions from June to July 2026, the program brought together students, trainees, and early-career professionals from across the Philippines in a two-part series combining an online Research and Policy Workshop Series and an in-person Skills-Based Workshop — Closing the Gap: The Front Lines of Surgical Care through Suturing and Splinting (July 11)

Part I — Research and Policy Workshop Series (Sessions 1, 2, and 3 | Online)

A three-session online series covering the landscape of global surgery, foundational research and scientific writing skills, and evidence-informed solutions design. The series culminated in a collaborative capstone presentation where participant groups proposed innovative, equity-driven interventions addressing real surgical access gaps in the Philippines — anchored in the Lancet Commission's six global surgery indicators.

Session 1 — Mapping the Landscape: Surgical Access and its Barriers in the Philippines

June 13, 2026 | Online

The first session introduced participants to the current landscape of surgical access in the Philippines — examining the systemic, geographic, socioeconomic, and policy-related barriers that prevent communities from receiving safe and timely surgical care. Through an expert-led lecture and facilitated breakout workshops, participants began developing their capstone project foundations by constructing Problem Trees and Objective Trees grounded in the Philippine context.

Session 2 — Building Research Skills: Scientific Writing and Research Proposal

June 20, 2026 | Online

The second session equipped participants with foundational research and scientific writing skills essential for contributing to evidence-based global surgery discourse. Participants learned how to apply the PICO framework to formulate researchable questions, conduct structured literature searches, and map key stakeholders relevant to their focal problems. By the end of Session 2, each group confirmed their final problem statement — the foundation of their capstone project proposal.

Session 3 — Designing Solutions: Innovation, Policy, and Research in Global Surgery

July 10, 2026 | Online

The culminating session of the Research and Policy Workshop Series brought together all the learning from the previous sessions into a collaborative capstone presentation. Participants refined their evidence-informed project proposals and presented them to a panel of evaluators, proposing innovative, equity-driven solutions to real surgical access gaps in the Philippines. The session also featured a lecture on design thinking and human-centered problem solving, and a talk on the Philippine context of global surgery and health policy.

Part II — Skills-Based Workshop (Session 4 | In-person)

A full-day, hands-on workshop focused on suturing and splinting — two foundational clinical skills essential to surgical care delivery in resource-limited and emergency settings. Through expert-led instruction and supervised scenario-based practice, participants developed practical competency applicable to community-level and emergency surgical care.

Together, the two components provide participants with both the intellectual framework and the practical skills to contribute to more equitable, safe, and accessible surgical care.

Session 4 — Closing the Gap: The Front Lines of Surgical Care through Suturing and Splinting

July 11, 2026 | In-person | Mapúa University School of Medicine

The skills-based workshop provided participants with direct, hands-on experience in suturing and splinting — two foundational clinical skills essential to surgical care delivery in resource-limited and emergency settings. Live demonstrations, and supervised scenario-based practice guided by physician preceptors, participants developed practical competency in wound closure techniques and extremity immobilization. The workshop was designed to reflect real-world conditions, ensuring that the skills gained are directly applicable to community-level and emergency surgical care.

Webinar Series

InciSe: Cutting through the Surface of Global Surgery marked the successful launch of InciSioN Philippines as one of the pioneer organizations advocating for global surgery in the country. Held across two insightful webinars—SCRUB IN (25 May 2024) and DISSECT (01 June 2024)—the event introduced the concept and significance of global surgery in public health and contextualized its role within the Philippine healthcare system.

Distinguished speakers, including Dr. Don Eliseo Lucero-Prisno III, Dr. Ronnie E. Baticulon, and Dr. Manuel Francisco T. Roxas, shared their expertise and experiences, shedding light on the challenges and opportunities in the field. InciSe successfully sparked meaningful dialogue, encouraged engagement, and set the stage for future initiatives in advancing global surgery among Filipino healthcare professionals and students.
